Help me settle this television dispute

This is the battle between putting Mike's huge television on the wall, or on a LCD TV stand.

When we bought our house, (did I ever mention that we never saw it in person until after the closing? But that's another story) the main selling point was the family room.  It's a large, airy room, with french doors on one side, that has plenty of room for all the kids toys.  The ceiling is large enough for a nine foot Christmas tree, and the fireplace keeps things warm on Football Sundays.

You can see that our television fits nicely into the built in shelves, and that Lindsay Lohan decided to go to trial. And that Eliza is still not dressed.  We spent all our time in this room until last fall, when Mike bought.....a 42 inch flat screen.

It doesn't fit into the family room shelves, so Mike thought we could mount it on the wall opposite the french doors.  But then we couldn't re-arrange the couches to my liking, and there was a glare. I like the fact that the way the TV is now, I can look into the room from the kitchen while I'm washing dishes, or cooking.  So the flat screen has been sitting in the living room, on the coffee table, for the past six months.

I think if we had some kind of entertainment center, or TV stand, it would bring order to the living room.  I mean, look at all those wires, and the printer just sitting there.  Mike still wants to move the flat screen into the family room, but I'm against it.

Tell me what you think, so I can explain to Mike that I'm right : )

Then I'm going to work on getting a new living room couch.  A girl can dream......

Could you mount the flat screen above the fire place? I've seen a sliding framed picture that can be pulled over to cover the hanging tv in case you want to "hide" it and then it will just look like a beautiful framed piece of art hanging above the fire place. Otherwise, I vote tv stand and keep them in the rooms where they are.

You're not going to like my answer - I would hang it above the fire place. Mostly because it would make the room more symmetrical.

Send the flatscreen to me, I can use it for treadmill and trainer time. Problem solved!

OK, dont hurt me, I am explaining this from a guys point of view. Men love their electronics, and Mike loves his TV, he is proud of his TV, its a guy thing, so go a head and say thats dumb, but its true, he is proud of the tv and wants to show it off and watch it. Can you wall mount it over the fireplace, I think it would good their.

I'm with the others to mount it above the fireplace.....You can get a cable card so you wouldn't need a box with all the wires.

So the family room is the tv room right? A casual space?. Why don't you put it above the fireplace? Your house looks like the same layout as mine. It looks like the french doors are on the left? And what do you use the "living room for"? I don't know. I'm so confused about what you use the 'living room' for and what you use the 'family room' for.....

We have a large flat screen mounted above the fireplace. I think you'd find the mantle actually looking larger than now. We were able to put all wires behind and run them behind the walls. It looks great, I mean for a giant tv. I'd prefer no tv, but gotta keep the hubby happy. We also have one mounted in our bedroom and it looks great, but again, we put the wires behind the walls.

We have a setup similar to yours and part of the reason we went with a 32" is because it still fits on the shelf next to the fireplace. No advice for you other than may the woman win (as she always should).

I agree with the over-the-fireplace-mounting idea. We don't have a fireplace but we do watch a lot of HGTV and I've seen it done there quite nicely.

Mike--she's right! Always trust a woman when it comes to interior decorating!

Sorry, we have ours over the fireplace too. We love it there in our living room. Our family room is lonely now! LOL!

I have to agree with everyone else, over the fireplace.

My mil has hers above their fireplace and it works well. When you rearrange the furniture the fp would still be a focal point so it seems like a safe place to put it

Sorry Molly, has to go over the FP. It will bring order to the wire chaos.

Molly, I would not be of any help to you because Mike's are always right. Remember that! And don't slap me through the computer. lol I love the woodwork in the family room.

It would look awesome and "centered" over the fireplace. My daughter has one like that with high ceilings and the big tv looks so good over the fireplace. Something to think about.

I like it over the fire place too (but that is only from looking at these pictures!! You are going to have to let us know what happens.
