Three things and a winner

Whenever I do a three thing Thursday list, it always ends up being more. Oh well.

1. did I ever mention that when I chew gum my Long Island accent comes back?

2. this weekend I plan to go out for drinks with my girls, eat pizza at Ralph's, get a mani/pedi at Babi Nails, run on the beach, and hang with my family.

3. and remember those who have died serving our country.

Home is where some of my heart is

I've been feeling a bit off this past week. The littlest things are making me tear up. I cried at the end of LOST (which I probably would have anyway) and I cried really hard at the end of the Biggest Loser, like Terms of Endearment type crying. (I didn't see the marathon episode until Saturday afternoon, because it was pre-empted on Tuesday by the Yankee/Red Sox game). Last night when Mike got home he looked at me and asked what was up, and I told him nothing is up. Then half a glass of wine later, I'm blubbering on the phone to one of my BFF's about a whole bunch of things.

I guess I'm more upset about my Mom selling her house than I realized. We're going to Long Island this weekend for one last trip home before she closes. 32 years in that house, there is a lot to say goodbye to.

It's also saying goodbye not to just a house, but to that whole area, and the friends and family that are still there. Yes we can visit, but the visits will probably be fewer.

Those Stay At Home Mom vs. Working feelings have been popping up again, pretty strongly. I love being home with the kids. But it's getting to the point now that they're older that I need something for myself. I think I'm ready to go back to work. Which doesn't scare me, but kind of does.

I'm feeling better after the crying jag, and Mike worked from home today and surprised me by saying I could run outside while he watched Luke (4.3 miles, 39:25 pace. I'm going to keep boring you with stats). Then a little retail therapy was in order, so after Luke went to school, and I picked Eliza up from school, we hit the mall. Where I bought Nuun, Sportsbeans and Clif Shots at EMS and took E for a spin on the Carousel. Then in Barnes & Noble, I immediately spied a new release by one of my favorite Chick Lit authors, which is exactly what is in order for this Holiday weekend.

Scary Food

It's no secret that I enjoy and appreciate food. Good food, and what I like to call splurge food. I think everyone has the right to choose what they put in their body, I'm not the food police and never will be. But I've seen some food options recently so over the top bad that I just had to blog about it.

Case number one. Per Luke's request, we took him to a restaurant chain for dinner for his birthday. For the record, the kids had cheeseburger sliders, fries, apple slices and ice cream. Mike and I split a cheeseburger deluxe, and ate whatever ice cream was left in the kid's dishes. While we were waiting for the food, I looked over the breakfast menu, expecting to see the usual breakfast combos. Instead, the choices were better suited for a dessert menu. Chocolate, chocolate chip pancakes, topped with chocolate ice cream. Pancakes with layers of strawberry ice cream, topped with strawberry syrup/preserves, and whipped cream. Yikes. My teeth hurt just looking at it.

A few days later, I caught a commercial for what I'll call a breakfast pastry. Never been a fan, one of my roommates in college used to gross me out because she would eat them raw. Their newest serving suggestion is to use them to make ice cream sandwiches. Huh???

Yesterday Mike was going through the coupons in the Sunday paper, and he showed me one for thickly sliced cheese toast. Their suggestion is to use the toast instead of hamburger buns. Those things have seven grams of fat per slice. I know this because I made a breakfast casserole for Christmas morning a couple of years ago, with the toast, along with eggs, cheese, and sausage. Something sinful that you have once a year on like, Christmas. I just can't imagine pairing those things up with a burger that already has enough fat.

I know it's all marketing, but it still bugs me. Okay, my rant is over. Just something to think about I guess.

Rollin' Along

It's been another good week fitness wise, I feel like I have a pretty good schedule figured out, which takes the guess work out of my days. Most of my runs were on the treadmill, and yesterday was another yoga day, but today I got to run a new route outside with my running group.

The weather is finally nice enough to feel as if winter is truly behind us, this morning we did seven miles in a part of town that was new to me, which is a nice change. I feel like I've claimed Saturday mornings for running. I ran Saturday's all through the winter with the group, and I plan on keeping it up, and do my longest run of the week on Saturdays. That way I don't have to worry during the week about Mike getting home from work on time for me to head out, or to get up earlier than usual to fit it in before he leaves. I think it's good all around, while I'm out running Mike has Saturday mornings alone with L&E which I know they all enjoy. Then I'll let him sleep in on Sundays, give him some affection, then it's all good.

Review of Vitalicious Vita Tops

After my giveaway last month of Deep Chocolate Vita Tops, I received some of my own to try out and review. I'll say right off the bat that it says a lot that Mike (who is still in the process of quitting smoking) has been eating them too.

We had a variety of Vita Tops to test out, from Chocolate Mint to Banana Nut, along with their Chocolate Brownies. If you aren't familiar with the product, one of their tag lines is "maximum nutrition for minimal calories." They are preservative free (must be kept frozen otherwise they spoil), have 8 grams of whole grains, 15 vitamins and minerals, are a good source of fiber with 100 calories and between 1 and 2 grams of fat per muffin. Completely feel good eating.

I would grab one out of the freezer, and either let it come to room temperature for a snack, or would pop it in the toaster to have for breakfast with my coffee. I put one next to Mike's water bottle in the fridge, so he could take it with him when he leaves for work. They have so many different flavors (three of chocolate alone) that it's easy to have a few favorites (at least for me). This is what I thought of each:

Apple Berry - I'm going to use the word "bursting" for this one, there were chunks of apple, along with whole blueberries and cranberries.

Blueberry Bran - very full flavored, lots of whole berries.

Golden Corn - it was dense, with a rich corn taste.

Bran Cranberry - sometimes bran can be grainy, this wasn't like that at all.

Banana Nut - subtle banana taste, I liked the addition of walnuts.

Chocolate Mint Chip - my favorite of them all, the mint flavor wasn't overpowering, and the chips just made it even better.

Triple Chocolate Chunk - reminded me of a devil dog.

Deep Chocolate - ditto on the devil dog.

We also had the Brownies, which to me tasted more like cake than a brownie, but the bonus was the nuts on top.

So if you're looking to find a way to eat muffins or chocolate and not feel guilty about it, definitely give these a try.

I'm a Versatile Blogger

Thanks to Elle for this "versatile blogger" award.....more bling for my sidebar!

I'm supposed to list seven things about myself, and pass it onto 15 new blog friends. I started listing blogs that I read frequently, and I had to stop, because we'd be here all day. I've shared so much about myself already, but there's always more to tell, so here goes:

1. I tend to drive a wee bit fast, although I didn't get a speeding ticket until about two years ago. I was going 81 mph in a 65. That same weekend I got a parking ticket, and then a letter from EZ Pass saying if I drove that fast thorough the exit again, they would revoke my pass. Turned out to be an expensive weekend.

2. Before having kids I traveled. Outside of the U.S. I've been to Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, France, The Netherlands, Venezuela, Belgium, Mexico, Canada and the Carribean. I would love to go to Japan.

3. I want to do some trail running. I sometimes run on the trails at a nature center near my house, but I don't think that counts.

4. I'm a fan of the Mets, Giants, Islanders, Knicks and SU for college basketball, which can cause some good natured friction within my family at times, since my Dad went to Chapel Hill and he and my brother are obviously big Carolina fans.

4. I played field hockey for four years in high school, was a cheerleader for three, and captain my senior year. Go Falcons!

6. I love libraries. There is one down the street from the house I grew up in, and I was there all the time. When I lived in Rochester, I worked down the street from a library, and would spend my lunch hours there. I love the feeling of finding a little quiet corner and staying there for as long as I can. It's different now with the kids, but they love it too.

7. When I was little my grandparents had a black cat named Molly. I've always suspected that I'm named after the cat, but no one would admit it.

Running and eating. Running.....and eating.

I had a great week fitness wise, which is a good thing because judging by the amount of food in my fridge you would think that more than four people lived in my house.

Three out of my four runs were done outside, and I managed to squeeze in a five miler before Luke's birthday party for his buddies. I was drained after two hours with 14 six year olds, and we didn't even have the party at our house! I managed to do an hour of yoga one day, a bike ride another, and did enough push ups, squats and planks to feel sore. I haven't tried the heart rate monitor on G-Unit yet, but I'm loving how much freer my outdoor runs feel. There are paved trails throughout my development, and it's great to just ramble around knowing I'm still getting my planned mileage in.

Food wise, we still have pizza left from the kid party, TWO cakes (one for the kids, and an ice cream cake that we had to celebrate a second time with the family, after we ate greek food) all the fixings for gyro's, including Mike's homemade tzatziki sauce which has so much garlic that you can smell your own breath after eating it. Mike did the weekly shopping yesterday while Luke and I were at yet another birthday party, so last night we had my favorite grilled veggie salad for dinner. So I'm in leftover heaven.

I didn't make the above Transformers themed birthday cake. But I ate it.

Five for Friday

1. I went to a new dentist this week for a cleaning. He was a nice enough guy, but the type who asks a ton of questions while your mouth is full of metal. One of our conversations went like this:

DDS: Are you athletic? You look athletic. What are you, five ten?

Me: Good guess, I am five ten. I run, I ran the Mountain Goat last weekend.

D: Running, UGH. Running makes me nauseous.

M: hrkm kgrof.

D: Do you have a brother? Is he as big as you? He must be really big.

M: I do have a younger brother. He's a plumber.

D: Then I guess he's not that big.


2. We had a raccoon come up to us on the deck a couple of weekends ago while Mike was grilling dinner. It would not go away, it was like that kid movie Over The Hedge. I threw some cans of Play Dough at him, and he kept ducking back and forth behind a tree like in an Arcade game. Mike shot off a Roman Candle (yes, fireworks. In our house it's a year round occurrence) and he still wouldn't go. We gave up, and Mike kept cooking. Every so often he would whip around and shine the flashlight on it, and the raccoon would turn his head like he was embarrassed for staring.

3. I'm not sure if I'm happy with my Nike's. They are a vast improvement over the Asics, which I realize now were too narrow, and did nothing to keep my foot centered. I've been feeling a twinge in my left heel, I've dealt on and off with plantar fasciitis in that foot, so I'm wondering if the Nike's aren't cushioned enough. I've only had them for two months, but I'm considering sneaking over to Fleet Feet for a second opinion. I'm having flashbacks to wearing a boot to bed for a month, cortisone shots and foot taping, and I really don't want to go down that road again.

4. I had a few moments this week:

I told Eliza to eat her corn on the cob like a typewriter. She didn't know what the hell I was talking about.

I learned that you need to be careful with what you touch after you use Ben Gay.

I went outside to put some outgoing mail in our mailbox, and when I got to the end of the driveway, I realized I was holding a box of rice.

First Techie Run and a Giveaway

I found it funny that in this month's Runner's World there is an article about running with a Garmin for the first time. Which is what I did on Monday. Mike made it home early enough for me to go for a three mile run in the chilly, yet sunny afternoon. I'll take it though after the weather we had on Mother's snowed, and I spent time in front of the fireplace reading, it felt more like March than May.

For the first mile of the run, I kept looking at G-Unit, in between watching where I was running and avoiding dog walkers. My pace kept going up and down, which makes sense because it takes me almost a mile to settle into my ten minute pace. I felt good after my self imposed week off, and the run went by quickly. Once I was home I was happy to see that what I thought is a 3 mile loop around the hood really is 3 miles. And now, I can officially report that I ran it in 28:54, with a 9:39 pace. Success!!

I wear mine when I do the pre-school drop off and I haven't showered. Run Like a Mother Review

I keep seeing Run Like a Mother pop up on blogs and different places online, so I was really excited to read it. I'm the type of person who only reads the first few lines of the inside cover of a book, I want to know what it's about, but I want to find out for myself what happens. So I wasn't sure what to expect from Run Like a Mother, but it delivered.

It was a nice change of pace to read a running book that was written by two women, Dimity McDowell, and Sarah Bowens Shea. As I was reading, a light bulb went off, when I realized that they were the women who wrote a Runners World article back in 2008 about training for the Nike Marathon in San Francisco. Dimity had to do the majority of her training on a bike, due to a stress fracture, and I remember thinking of how much of an extra challenge that must of been.

As I read further, I found I really liked Dimity and Sarah, I enjoyed their humor, and we're the same age, so I appreciated their taste in music and references to things from their past (Guess jeans anyone?). I could completely relate to Dimity being prone to injury (at times my past hamstring, arch, hip, and toe injuries have all ached at the same time).

The book is broken into 26 chapters, with a .2 page at the end of each one (a la, the distance of a marathon). The .2's are all different, with lists of things like what goes through their minds during a run or favorite running tunes. The book is a combination of "how to" for women who are starting to run, and for women who already run. It covers topics such as dealing with injury, exercise addiction or running during pregnancy. I'm still learning about the proper fuel for long runs, and I found the nutrition section very helpful, as was the chapter on the importance of cross training. (I'm going to be better about planks. Really).

Scattered throughout the book are "Take It From A Mother" sections, which poses a question, and the answers come from real women who run. From what your favorite speed work out is, to wether you run with a partner, or the most memorable thing your kid has said to you about running.

Which brings me to the Moms who "run and feel guilt" issue. I have to figure out on a daily basis how I'm going to get my run in, life was much easier when my kids napped and they weren't aware of what I was doing with that time. Now that they're older, at times I feel bad taking the time away from them. But the way Dimity addresses this guilty feeling really makes sense to me. The time you spend running strengthens your spirit, it re-charges you to be your best each day. It makes you more present as a mother for the rest of those hours in the day. Which I agree with, if I get to sweat, then everything I'm faced with during my day as a Stay At Home Mom is much easier to handle.

I related to so many things in this book, but I would have done so even if I didn't have children. It really is a celebration of women who run, and all that goes along with it.

It's all charged up and ready to go.....I'm going to call him G-unit, since 50 cent always gets my running groove on.

I think this was the easiest Mother's Day gift Mike ever had to buy. He said to find what I wanted online, print it out, and he would find it.

Which he did.

I can't wait to run tomorrow.

Five Things on a Beautiful Friday. Well, seven.

I'm thinking in bullets today.

1. I'm slacking in my food journal this week. Just haven't done it.

2. I have not run since my race. It's been a nutty week, Mike is away on business, and I just wanted to take a break. I did take a lot of walks with the kids, stretched and rolled on the foam roller, baked and cooked and read. Now I feel refreshed.

3. A hot topic on the Fleet Feet message boards this week was about using ipods during a race, when it's officially not allowed. I'm a rule follower, I might not be happy about it, but I'll do it. What's your take?

4. In between Birthday, Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day festivities, we're having my neighborhood's annual garage sale. I just sold my first item, a Diaper Champ, that Mike said would never go.

5. I haven't watched LOST, Survivor, or The Office this week, waiting to watch with Mike. I am in Housewives of NYC and NJ heaven though, seriously, twice in one week?! Love it.

I wanted to wish Tara Good Luck on her first marathon this weekend!!!

May it be a good week

I was in a bit of a funk on Monday. I was still mad about the race on Sunday, but after reading the comments on my post about it (thank you), and talking to my Dad (former triathlete and marathon runner) I felt much better. I was given the chance to read and review Run like a Mother, and I'm about half way through, and will post about it soon, but it's helping to light my fire again.

Mother's Day always sneaks up on me. I know it's because Luke's birthday is a few days before hand, so I'm usually preoccupied with planning his day, forget about Mother's Day. I can't believe he's going to be six. We brought him home from the Hospital on Mother's Day, after 31 hours of labor, attended by my sweet Korean Doctor who was pretty much pushed aside by a big Russian Doctor who was on duty and had nothing else to do. My epidural only worked on my right side, Luke broke his collar bone on the way out, and the only reason he got out was because the big Russian kept yelling at me. Ah, memories.

So I have to think of something for my Mom, and send it out today so that she gets it in time. My mom was/is a single parent. When we were in grade school she put herself through college, studying at the kitchen table at night while we watched TV, and found babysitters that we liked to stay with us while she was at class. One time she found a $100 bill on the sidewalk, and instead of spending it on herself, she took my sister and I for new Girl Scout uniforms, as well as every accessory she could find to splurge on. I still have my pocket knife.

I'm just realizing I don't have any recent photos of just her and I, so I'll post this one of us when I was a baby. I've posted it before, but I love it. Dig the arm bangle, she's hotter than Wonder Woman.

Race Report: I tried to tame the Goat, but I just smacked him around a bit.

Not happy with my race today. At. All. You know that Wall? I hit that sucker hard, and it hit me right back.

Last Wednesday, we had snow showers. Today in Syracuse, the temperature was in the high '70's, and humid, it felt more like July than the 2nd of May. I watched the news tonight about the Mountain Goat 10 miler, and they called the race "grueling." Just setting the stage for you.

I was pumped for today. I was perfectly hydrated, was up early, but not early enough, because Luke and Eliza were up shortly after me. The weekends when I run early, I'm used to having the downstairs to myself, so I can stretch, caffeinate, and watch the news in peace. I was running around a bit getting them fed while getting myself ready, I had to ask Mike to feed me a few bites of banana and peanut butter toast so I could get outside in time to meet my friend/neighbor Heather since we were riding to the race together.

We made it downtown, where we met up with my sis in law Jeannine, friends Norine, Suzanne, and Karin, chat with Bill and Aunt Carol, then my friend Kelly, then meet up with the Lake Effect crew. It was hot, but I wore my LE tech shirt, along with hat and sunglasses, and had a bag of sports beans as my security blanket. I was good, and left my ipod at home, although I saw plenty of people with earbuds, even though they weren't officially allowed. I wasn't really nervous, just ready to get this thing started.

The gun went off at 10:15, and I crossed the start line at 10:17. No joke, a quarter of a mile in, I felt a crampy/stitch in my left side. But it went away almost as fast as it showed up, and I settled into a 10 minute pace. About a mile in, a woman named Ann ran up to me, and said she's seen me at all the training runs, and that she paces herself along with me. We chatted until we reached the first series of inclines, which I was able to do pretty easily. It took me exactly 20 minutes to get to the 2 mile mark. After those hills were done, the course went through a residential area, where some people had their sprinklers on which felt lovely.

I guess around mile 4.5 I slowed down a bit, I wanted to save my energy for the next killer hill. I chomped on some sports beans, and was looking forward to some water.....first lesson, I will not run this course again without a water bottle. There were issues with the supply of paper cups, and I thought they could use a few more water stations. At mile five, there were zero cups left, one dude poured water from a gallon jug into my mouth, another poured water over my head, which made me look like I had wet myself, but whatever. The hardest hill of the race, E. Colvin street was coming up, so I had other things to worry about.

This hill is a looooong incline, and at the end it turns into a very sharp incline. I ran it once during a training run, and it was hard, but I did it. There were a lot of people walking, but I really didn't want to, so I trudged up, not sure if I was running slow or walking fast but I was doing it. I was almost to the top, and a woman yelled "you're almost there #123, you're doing it!" Thanks to the numbers and words of encouragement that were written on the road in chalk, I knew I had 200 meters left. At that's when the stitch came back. And. I. Walked. And I hit The Wall.

I hit the wall one other time, at the 11 mile point of my half marathon last fall. But I got through it, I never stopped, or walked. I don't know if it was the heat or the incline, but once I got to the top of Colvin, I walked. I had zero motivation. I was by myself, no ipod (worst race ever to test out running without music), and I was ready to just walk off and go home. I walked off the cramp, and shuffled along, then thought, F*&k it. Walked. I fought with myself like this for the whole of mile seven. I tried to forget it was a race, and to think of it as a training run (where I never walked once), no dice. Walk, run. Walk, run. Then I started to notice sirens, and a guy laying on the side of the road with an oxygen tube in his nose, and paramedics were loading a girl onto a stretcher. People were having a hard time with this race. There was an ambulance parked, and another one pulled up, then a cop ran out to say that there were four more people who were out up ahead. That was the kick I needed. I was a bit down, but definitely not out.

I started up again near the end of mile seven, looking for some water, but only saw ice. I spoke with some people who were asking about my shirt, and then a girl ran up and said "nice job on Colvin #123! I watched you run up that!" I told her I was paying for it now, as we started up the last nasty hill, which I walked part of. All of a sudden it was mile 8.

Spoke with another woman who said for last years race it was 50 degrees, so this was a huge change. Mile 9 went by. I recognized a girl, K, from our running group, who I know does triathlons. I felt so much better about my run, thinking about what her fitness level is, and that she was finishing up the same time as me. She said she wasn't having the best race, but we were almost done. She told me to keep moving, and then I saw Mike and the kids, and Karin. Like the graceful runner that I am, I lumbered over to them, hugged and tried to kiss them, but mostly sucked in some O2, then went on. I saw the balloons of the finish line, and I wanted to pop them. I counted in my head the last 100 meters just to get there, and finally finished.

It took me a long ass time, my first five miles were 52:06, the last five were 56:06. It doesn't pain me as much to look at the times when it's split like that.

Later on, Mike told us about how many people were dropping at the finish. They had lines of cots to lay people out on until they could get enough stretchers and enough ambulances. Not a pretty sight, I'm hoping everyone who was ill is better now.

Ten minutes after I finished, I bitched and moaned to everyone who would listen, then I was done. My mood improved over some Michelob Ultra at the after party, then improved much more later on at Norine's house. She made some killer pizza topped with fontina, ricotta, asparagus and spring onion, paired with a beautiful salad with all sorts of veggies. I ate that, and some cheese pizza. And a burger. And J's tomato/mozz/basil salad. And washed it down with a couple of refreshing Nine Irons (cranberry, fresca and vodka).

When we got home, the kids showed me the sign they made for me, and Eliza ran up and down the deck playing "race," slapping hands of her imaginary friends as she ran by them, and holding up signs. Mike said, "I think someone's Mommy made a very good impression on them today." You can guess how that made me feel.

The race is done for this year, but I'll get that Goat next year, and make some cheese out of him.
