I appreciate all the comments over my Boilermaker 15k Dilemma. After thinking it over, talking with Mike, and checking in with my Doc, I decided to forgo the race this year.
I'm very bummed not to run it, I'm going to miss running with my girls for the fifth year in a row, and I was planning on meeting up with Jon, but it's not in the cards this year. I ran two miles yesterday, and my foot is a teeny bit sore today, nothing like it was after my 3 miler. I just need to take things slower than I hoped, but I'll get there.
I spoke with the Race Director, who was very helpful and optimistic. Since I have an injury, I can defer my registration until next summer (the 35th Anniversary of the race!), and he's giving my slot to a runner on the waiting list. So it works out all around.
Oh. And it's um, Weigh In Wednesday.................but it's a good one, I lost 2 pounds!
I was a little surprised, since we're coming off a Holiday Weekend. But I was mindful of what I ate all weekend. At one BBQ, I avoided the burgers & dogs, pasta and meatballs, and filled my plate with salads, including this whole berry salad that Mike's Aunt and Uncle make, it is soooo good.
The photo is blurry since I had to use my phone, but it's made with wheat, barley, nuts, dried cherries and feta. You can find the recipe for it here.
But I wasn't a saint, I had beers, half a chocolate chip cookie, and these salt and pepper Kettle Chips that are seriously like crack. I never buy them for myself, it would be too dangerous. But it's perfectly fine to bring them to a party. Along with a party hat.
At another BBQ, I did the same thing, ate salads, and a veggie burger, and clams. And some of Mama's Little Helper aka Chardonnay. My friend Norine made a couple of dips based on Weight Watcher recipes, where you substitute yogurt for sour cream, and light cheese on top of a corn salsa dip. So I didn't feel guilty over my choices.
I'm sure the fact that I ran four times since last Tuesday, and swam almost every day last week contributed to that weight loss.
Anyhoo, I hope everyone else had some good direction on the scale.
My question this week is:
How do you handle eating at parties? Do you avoid treats? Eat just a small portion of them? Do you ever switch ingredients to make a dish lighter?
Inquiring minds want to know!

Glad you did what was best for you, Molly. I didn't register in time so am not running it this year. Will be sure to register immediately next year.
Hope the foot gets better.
You made the right decision, too many people would have (probably including me) would have done it and would either get injuried or be mentally defeated because it was not raced how you wanted it to.
Parties are on my cheat day, I have one cheat day a week, I save it for parties and so forth
Congrats on the weight loss, mine was 1.2 pounds down
Congratulations on the weight loss! I am so happy for you. I have not lost. I have gained. Boo!
Good choice on the race, I know it is hard though.
I try to do what you did - I don't always win at it though. I usually eat salads and like 3 desserts, which equals a burger.
Making a decision like that about a race is never easy, but you sound like you are at peace with it. Plus, being able to defer is something to look forward to!
That berry salad looked great. I try an approach at parties like you--hitting the good stuff and avoiding the bad. Of course, if I have more than one glass of wine, all bets are off!
I'm glad it all worked out Molly - I know that was not an easy decision!
And yea for weight loss - I surprised myself by losing 1.5. I was not very good over the holiday weekend and thought I was going to gain!
Sorry you're not able to run the race, but there's always next year and taking care of your foot now means you'll have a good chance of being there next year!
Take care!
Congrats on the scale results! As for picnics (and we have been to two in the past week) I do small portions, lots of fruit, water or something light, and no seconds....
Now I've got to comment that your dog needs a bigger hat-LOL! Boy, has he grown. (Our neighbor just got a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy and even though he is still small, you should see the size of his feet!)
I spoke with the race director as well, and have confirmed that all your post-race food and beer has been transferred to me. Am skipping weigh-in next Wednesday as a safety precaution.
Sorry I will miss you. The food is my only consolation.
I've been waiting ALL day to post this comment . . . I LOST .8 (now, I LOVE that - that's good enough for me - that's a loss, that'll keep me from getting voted off the island this week). WTG Molly loosing 2 pounds even with the holiday!
Frank's photo is awesome!!!
I eat a small amount of most foods at a carry-in/party that look good. I do like to switch up recipe ingredients whenever possible - but I have a LOT to learn in this area, though.
2 pounds! Holy awesome.
Thank you for linking the recipe!! looks amazing.
Good decision with the race!
And super big yay for the weightloss... especially with the holidays! I'm horrible at parties. I've always heard that you should eat before you go, but then I just eat food when I'm full and feel worse! :)
You made the right call passing on the race. Glad it worked out so well with the race director. Always nice to hear about positive experiences and accommodating people. Happens far too infrequently.
Impressive weight loss over the holiday weekend. Whatever you lost I was able to find, and maybe a little more on top of that. Bad me.
You made the right decision, but I fully understand how difficult a decision it was. Next year's anniversary run will be so cool!!
Congrats on the 2 lbs - yay!!! :)
Nice loss!!
2 pounds is awesome! Great job. I will do my weigh in tomorrow morning. I went for a run early then rushed home to shower arriving to work with make up in tow and wet hair. There was no time. I havn't wegihed mysefl for the last couple of months so I don't know where i'll be anyways.
I did pretty good this weekend (aside from the booze of course!). I made a veggie tray and instead of ranch dip made with sour cream I made a white bean spread. it was pretty good.
I will try that wheatberry salad. It looks so colorful and yummy. thans for the reipe.
And very cool that they are defering your registaration. And I'm sure whoever gets your bib will make the most of it. You probably made thier day!
You'll be strong next year. Congrats with the 2 pounds! I must be honest, I avoid parties. Don't like them much but if I do attend the one in a year or two years I go over board with everything. When in serious training I don't attend any social events, even for months some times.
I am glad you could defer until next year!
Parties I always go crazy and eat a lot. I try to restrain myself but it doesn't always work.
That's awesome that not only can you defer but they gave the spot to someone else...that doesn't happen in our local races much.
I know you're disappointed, you've been running the Boilermaker ever since I have read your blog! I think you made the right choice though.
Congrats on the weight loss! I freaking go all out at parties...treats and all. I just make sure that I make up for it by eating healthier the next couple of days. I have substituted applesause, agave nector, and soy butter in my cookies/cakes before. I also use plain yogurt instead of sour cream on baked potatoes and such. People look at me like I am crazy, but then they try it. You can't tell the difference!
BTW-I love Frank!
YOu made the right decision twinsie! Congrats on the weight loss during the holidays! Wow!!
I love Frank and his festive attire!!!!
Parties are good for me (if they aren't at my mom's house). I get so self-conscious about eating in front of people that I end up hardly touching any food. At my mom's parties? Yeah, I'm a grazer, but not as bad as most people there. Phew.
Very cute dog photo! I love a good dog in a party hat picture!
I like to change ingredients to make thing lighter. Sorry about the race but I think you made a good choice. Your dog is so cute. That salad looks awesome.
I'm glad you made a decision about the race, and it sounds like a smart one:)
As for my weigh in...not so good. I just really love beer...and hot dogs and all the terrible food that floats around. On a positive note, it could have been a lot worse because I ran nearly everyday last week! Thank goodness for burning off some of those calories!! I had to make cookies and made them with whole wheat flour instead...I haven't figured out a way to eat healthy because I'm so stinking picky!! Good work on your 2 pounds!
I'm glad deferred. Smart. Festive Frank is the cutest!
Great job keeping eating in check. As you saw iwas nowhere near as disciplined.
I always sub ingredients when cooking for healthier options.
I'm so happy it worked out :)
Congrats on the two pounds- that's fantastic, especially with all of the bbqs and ice cream that this season comes with.
WOW Frank got so big!!!!
WOW! I have been away longer than I thought. I am sorry you have to forgo a race. I had to do it once when an idiot slid tackled me playing soccer and tore ligaments in my left ankle back in 06. I think your making the right decision. It might have been a favorite over the years, but this year it is more of a stepping stone to your bigger events.
