A few weeks back, I was sent some pain relieving patches from SALONPAS. For those who suffer from muscle pain or arthritis, they can be used as a pill-free alternative to pain relief.
I try to avoid popping ibuprofen if I can, and I hadn't heard of these before, so I was curious. The patches are FDA approved, and non prescription, the active ingredients are menthol, and methyl salicylate, a NSAID.
The first time I tried them was after I did something to my hip, while I was getting Eliza out of her booster seat, after a morning of Christmas shopping. I probably strained the muscle a bit, so I figured it was a good time to try the patches. The patch itself was soft and a bit stretchy, and I could smell the menthol. I didn't say anything to Mike or the kids about having it on. They're the first ones to say that they smell something, but they kept quiet, so I was in the clear. The main benefit of the patches, is that the active ingredients go right into the site of pain, and are time released, so you can keep it on for 8 - 12 hours. I probably had it on for seven. The next day when I woke up, my hip felt fine, and it stayed fine which made me happy. Because I still had shopping to do. I can see myself using these for muscle pain when I start upping my running mileage again.
As you can see from the above photo, SALONPAS is giving away a sample package of the pain relief patches, along with a pedometer, water bottle and towel. Giveaway is open to residents of the U.S. (I hate excluding Canada, but it's an FDA thing).
To enter, please check out their website here, and tell me something you learned about the patches by leaving me a comment. That's it : )
Giveaway ends at midnight EST on Tuesday January 25.
*Note, I was given a sample of SALONPAS for the purpose of this review. My opinions on the product are my own.

those sound great! I am a new follower, but am enjoying your blog! I learned that you can leave them on your achy old knees WHILE running, bonus! Seems since I turned 40 everything aches more and more...
They sound like it would be worth trying. I have a lot of pain and do take oral pain meds and I have noticed my pain getting worse. I am hopeful that trying new things I will find some help with the pain. I had never heard of this specific item. I learned by viewing their site that the patch is made with a special stretchy material that allows you to continue being active while it works.

What did I learn? that instead of taking a pill which has to be processed by the tummy first by wearing the patch you are delivering the pain relief directly to the site.
I hate taking pills too but with this current knee pain and the occasional back tweaks I get would certainly try it out :D
They are better than Icy Hot patch and Thermacare which is probably why they don't stay stocked at Wal-Mart for line. I hope training is going well for the Tri.
You can't put it on your face and you shouldn't use more than 2 patches per day. It sounds really cool and I'd love to try it for my various aches. My tummy is tired of Motrin.
I've used their patches on my back before, they work great! Now, if I can get them to do some hocus pocus on my heel then I'd be a happy camper! :)
I learned that their pain relief and arthritis patches are one and the same
I learned that this 12 hr. patch is great for arthritis pain.

I learned that there are many different forms of there product - spray, patches, aqua patches, etc. I also thought it was interesting that it can be used for pain from a bruise - cool!

I learned that their patches last longer than others.
That is interesting. I've never seen those but it's probably not available in SA. I like the idea of a pill alternative.
I totally need these!! We were just talking about a similar product in my comments yesterday when I was complaining a need a whole body ice suit.
I learned that the medicine goes directly into your blood stream without going through your digestive tract.
I suffer from chronic back pain and I am always looking to try new things!
I learned that you put the patch (I looked at the large patches for low back) and the medicine passes through the skin and to the capillaries and then to your blood stream to work faster.
I so want these!

My shoulders and knees are somewhat of a mess...and something I can wear while working out is a BONUS!!
I learned that they're the only FDA approved pain patch... which is intriguing, because I use the Icy Hot patches like it's my job. :D
