Beef, chicken or fish?

Note to self: no more pedicures until after September 12.  My toes look cute right now, but I need those calluses to keep running blisters at bay.

I had a great run Saturday, we had 15 miles on the schedule.  I think I have my energy routine figured out, I've been using a fuel belt, with three bottles of water, and one of nuun.  I took a gel (I've been favoring the lemon/berry flavors, the vanilla and chocolate ones make me gag) at mile 6, and mile 12, before I felt like I needed it, and sipped water when I wanted it.  I got into my little zone around mile 13 which is the most boring stretch of road, just kept my head down and kept at it.  We took a turn that added more mileage than I thought it would, so we ended up with 15.67 miles, it took 2:40:24, with an average pace of 10:16.   Not bad.

During the run J&N and I talked about compression socks and ice baths and running in general, after they left my house I decided to try out an ice bath.  Took six ice packs and threw them in the tub of cold water....and EEEEEYOOOOWWWW it was ccccccold.  Soaked for 20 minutes, Eliza tried to keep me company but she decided to put on her elephant costume and go play, so I had time to read my new Marian Keyes book.   I think it worked, I wasn't sore at all later or the next day, so I think that's going to be my new habit after the long runs.

I'm having an issue with meat. As in, I don't know if I want to eat it anymore.  I've always eaten meat, but until I met Mike, it had to be very well done for me to do so.  I like burgers and bacon.  And lamb chops.  Not a huge fan of chicken, I can barely cook it, and when I do I have it in something like enchiladas or mole.  Or I bake the hell out of it.  I don't do ham.  When I was pregnant I couldn't look at or smell any kind of meat.  I'm a fan of veggie meals, I usually choose the vegetarian option at weddings, or order fish when we eat out.  Love sushi.

I made my Healthy Helper this week with ground beef, and I housed that because it's mixed in with the pasta.  I ate that rotisserie chicken, but not much of it.  We had ribs on Friday, and I picked at them and around them, and ate most of the black bean salad, slaw and corn bread instead.  So I don't know what's up, I just don't want to eat it, and this isn't the best time to experiment with my diet since my mileage is going up every week.  So I have a conundrum.

As you can see by the photo, I like to play with food, as I did with the kids dinner the other night, when they requested smiley face breakfast.  Take away the egg and sausage and I'd be happy to eat the bagel and strawberries.  Which I kind of did, I'm still picking at their leftovers.....

Sounds like a great run! I've never tried an ice bath but heard they certainly help. I'm with you on the meat thing. I've been doing less and less lately. I'm just going with how I feel and if there is a day I want something with meat, I'll eat it, but most days it's something veggie.

Ok, you didn't try to jump into the bathtub full of ice water did you? See, you need to start filling it with you in there. Warm water (about 2 inches), then just cold, then ice when its full. Getting into ice water is horrific!

Weird about the meat. Maybe stick to burgers? I guess fish is just fine for protein. And I'd love to have sushi every day!

Could eat meat when you were pregnant? Hmmmmm.

20 minutes in an ice bath ... you are much tougher than me!!! Good for you! I firmly believe ice baths and foam rollers are the key to quick recovery ... its unfortunate they both hurt to do!

U cannot give up bacon!! Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about that!! HAve a good week Molly1

I think we are on very similar GU schedules! That's about when I always do mine.

I hear you on the meat issue...I've toyed with being vegetarian before and I think I did a bad job of getting my iron in. I've switched back, but I can still take or leave meat, to be honest. Good luck with it.

Love the fun breakfasts! It's almost too hot to eat!

When I have the choice of veggie versus meat, I go the veggie route (as long as it is lactose-free); it is usually much more appetizing. I love my meat, though. With me, it's chicken and burgers (no buns), fish if I'm alone, and steak if we're on holiday and near a steakhouse (last time was last August so those days are few and far between).
Great run. And, cute breakfast for the kids (wish I could use stuff like that to trick my boys; they just comment and play with it instead).

"EEEEEYOOOOWWWW" is the nice way to put the feeling of an ice bath, I rarely swear but an icebath makes me come really close to it.

Make sure you wear a beanie or a hooded sweatshirt (yes it will get wet) so you dont make your body too cold.

I will stick with compression

Good job on the miles! Im glad you have the energy down, I took some Luna Moon bites with me on mine this weekend they used to work.. But I have not eaten them for awhile, I dont usually nibble on my 13 miles but I was training with 16 on the agenda for the full, after 2 lil moons my tummy got mad at me. I threw them right in the trash! I need to find a snack!

You sound just like me, JUST like me, with your meat. Seriously, I can't even believe it.

Can I steal...or....borrow....or at least share your mileage? As you know I'm short exactly 15 this week...and I'm not gonna make it up. Not.

I hear you on the meat. I really just prefer veggies, and I feel a lot better when I eat little to no meat. As another person mentioned, I discovered I wasn't getting enough iron when I first started eating mostly veggies (discovered this when my hair started falling out too fast). I've started taking a multivitamin and that has helped a lot.

As far as eating chicken, the only way I like it is when cooked in the oven. Anything that calls for pan frying or any chicken on the stove is just disgusting!

Ice bath...! I don't know if I'll manage that. I get a craving for meat after long runs. Think the body needs protein to do some repairs. As long as there's no fat I'm OK with meat.

I've actually read that calluses can make blisters more difficult to deal with, I suppose if you get a blister under the callus.

Michigan Jon was absolutely right. Insert body, then water/ice. Great opportunity to catch up on reading.
I let my son throw in the ice, he loves it.

I credit the ice bath with delivering zero post-run soreness. Amazing trick.

Hi Molly,
Nice job on your long run! I am with you...the chocolate and vanilla flavors...not so much:( You know how much I love chocolate but not in the gels. I agree with ajh, it is way to flippig hot to eat! Nothing looks good anymore.

Enjoy the rest of the week Chica!

I can't say I'm much of a meat eater either, and when I do, it's chicken b/c I know it's full of protein and iron. I felt very iron deficient the other day, as I tend to do when my mileage pickes up, so I did have a hamburger loaded with spinach. Didn't feel much different the next day but at least I tried. You're so smart, whatever you end up doing, you'll research and know how to get in the stuff you need to. I love the pic of the breakfast for dinner :).

Wow! 15 miles! I am in awe of you! By the way, could you come over early on the 15th and make that breakfast for my kids' dinner?! OK, I could probably do it myself. Too cute!

Great job on your run. Lol, I don't think I can try ice-bath. 20 minutes? Can't even imagine:)

Hey Molly! Ok I will be looking for you. I hope not too many people will be wearing a camo skirt!

I will be wearing a yellow sleeveless, tank top shirt with the purple old style nike tempo shorts. No hat or visor. Usually I stand at the stop light at the intersection there inthe gray bib area, because my college roommate and her dad start there, then as we get closer to the start time, I move up into the yellow bib area. I think I will have a yellow bib although I am not sure...just assuming based on past years and my times, etc etc.

Hopefully we will see each other!!

I could never take an ice bath! Yikes!!!

Weird that you are starting to turn away from meat. Did something happen? You are the one who taught me to put bacon in my brownies girl! :)

You know, I've been getting this way with meat too, but since I don't run, I attributed it to the heat-I just don't feel that hungry for a big meal. (Maybe that's it with you.)I also have toyed with the idea of becoming a vegetarian off and on for the past couple years, but...
