What did you think of Katniss?

I have 12 miles planned for today, and I'm meeting J & N at lunchtime to run some hills.  The one thing about mid-day long runs, is that fuel can be a bit tricky. I don't want to have anything too heavy right before we go, but I know I'm going to be hungry.  So right now I'm having coffee and a banana. I broke out a NYC bagel out of the freezer, and I'll have that mid-morning with some peanut butter. When I lace up my shoes I'll have a honey stinger waffle, with a Vega drink.  During the run I'll refuel with some chews.

We'll see how that works.

Let's talk Hunger Games.

I really liked the movie, I thought they did a good job of bringing the book to life, and I loved Lenny Kravitz's gold eyeliner. Now in the book, the lead character, Katniss is described as thin, due to starvation.  She spends her days hunting in the woods with a bow and arrow, in order for her family to survive. In the movie, Katniss is played by Jennifer Lawrence, and she looks fit and strong, but some critics are saying she looks too "big" for the role.

I didn't think she looked too big, I thought she looked like she should have, a smart, strong, tough girl who could run through the woods and climb trees and take on her fellow tributes.

Eliza is going to be a teenager before I know it, and I'm going to do everything I can for her to have a positive body image.  She's going to be bombarded with pictures of models and actresses, and I want her to know that if you live a healthy lifestyle, you will look healthy.

And I'll let her see the Hunger Games when the time is right.

Tell me, have you seen the movie?  If so, what did you think of Jennifer/Katniss?

I enjoyed the movie. It was 'lighter' than the book but a good rendition. I loved Jennifer as Katniss.
And Lenny...oh Lenny. There could have been more of him...

Loved it. Left a lot of details from the book but still good. I was pleasantly pleased with the casting.

That's interesting that they are attacking her for not being thin enough because I remember reading controversy when they started casting and were looking for people who were emaciated-looking. I think people are trying to stir up trouble no matter what they do.
I loved the movie.

I just finished the book last weekend and haven't seen the movie yet, but have seen the pics (like above). I say strong and fit is the image we want portrayed to girls, not skinny! And like you, it's so important to me as a mom of a girl that she values strong and confident, NOT scrawny model thin!

Enjoy your 12!

And is Lenny Kravitz Cinna?

Mmmmm .... Vanilla Stinger Waffle ...

Saw the movie, thought Katniss was very good, but didn't really like the movie overall. Not really sure why - it just didn't work for me. I really liked the first book (less so the second and third), but I guess the characters just didn't match what I had in my head. Too much of the jerky-camera approach as well. I know why they did it - to downplay the brutality and morality of what was happening during the actual games - but I didn't like it as a cinematic approach. Wow - that sounded artsy - this coming from a guy who's crazy excited to learn they're making a second Anchorman.

I feel like the Hunger Games thing is along the lines of the Twilight series for me...much like the Twilight series though I'll resist it for a while and then end up loving it!

I thought the actress they picked for Katniss was perfect for the part. As usual I like the book better because in the movie you miss so many details. I also wasn't keen on the hurky jerky directing for some of the action scenes. Made my head spin.

Finally saw the movie today. I loved it, mostly because I loved the book series. There are plenty of things to critique, my biggest one is that Peeta just didn't seem like the "right" person for me. I think Katniss was a perfect cast. Although the character in the book was thinner, I am glad Katniss looked healthy.

First, I tried the stinger waffle for my first time last week. Thought it was some pretty delicious fuel!

Secondly, I've seen the movie. And I LOVED Katniss. I love that she seems strong. I like that perspective more than the book's perspective.

I'm totally behind the "Hunger Games" times, but my perpetual goal is to raise a daughter who can be happy being strong and fit and not fret over an single pound of her body, but rejoice in all that it can do.

I have not seen the movie yet but I have read the book and I loved it! I can't wait to take in the movie!

Sorry but I haven't seen the movie and I haven't read the book.
I have always had doubts on the mid-day runs, it is difficult to understand what and how much is better to eat. The risks are 2: too weak to run because we have eaten few food or stomachache because we have eaten too much.

In the movie, no one in the family looked too thin. If Katniss was too healthy, what about Gabe?

My only complaint about the movie was that there wasn't enough Lenny Kravitz...drool....

Seriously. Drool....

I thought the actress playing Katniss was perfect for the role. She seemed strong and smart. They did a pretty good job on the movie vs the book...except I thought Peeta would be more doughy...(see, the critics all think the girl is too big and I think the guy was too small..haha)

So glad to hear you liked the movie. I'm going to make my husband take me to see it before he leaves. I'm not expecting it to be as good as the book of course, but I think it will be a great movie!

I'm completely behind the "Hunger Games" periods, but my constant objective is to increase a girl who can be satisfied being powerful and fit and not worry over an individual lb of her human body, but delight in all that it can do.

I'm so proud of myself for finishing the trilogy on vacation but haven't seen the movie. Although THing 1 and her friends are asking me to take them this weekend. I wondered as I read how thin they'd portray Katniss. Glad to hear she's fit and strong...excellent role model!

I've read all three books, but still haven't seen the movie yet. I've heard mixed reviews on it, so it's good to hear someone else that like the movie.

If I had to bet i'd guess she wasn't too thin because it would take too much for her to lose weight for the scenes in district 12, gain weight again for while she's in the capitol and to thin her out again during the games.

Lastly saw the film these days. I liked it, mostly because I liked the publication sequence. There are a lot of things to judge, my greatest one is that Peeta just didn't seem like the "right" individual for me. I think Katniss was the best throw. Although the personality in the publication was slimmer, I am grateful Katniss checked healthier.
