Scary Food

It's no secret that I enjoy and appreciate food. Good food, and what I like to call splurge food. I think everyone has the right to choose what they put in their body, I'm not the food police and never will be. But I've seen some food options recently so over the top bad that I just had to blog about it.

Case number one. Per Luke's request, we took him to a restaurant chain for dinner for his birthday. For the record, the kids had cheeseburger sliders, fries, apple slices and ice cream. Mike and I split a cheeseburger deluxe, and ate whatever ice cream was left in the kid's dishes. While we were waiting for the food, I looked over the breakfast menu, expecting to see the usual breakfast combos. Instead, the choices were better suited for a dessert menu. Chocolate, chocolate chip pancakes, topped with chocolate ice cream. Pancakes with layers of strawberry ice cream, topped with strawberry syrup/preserves, and whipped cream. Yikes. My teeth hurt just looking at it.

A few days later, I caught a commercial for what I'll call a breakfast pastry. Never been a fan, one of my roommates in college used to gross me out because she would eat them raw. Their newest serving suggestion is to use them to make ice cream sandwiches. Huh???

Yesterday Mike was going through the coupons in the Sunday paper, and he showed me one for thickly sliced cheese toast. Their suggestion is to use the toast instead of hamburger buns. Those things have seven grams of fat per slice. I know this because I made a breakfast casserole for Christmas morning a couple of years ago, with the toast, along with eggs, cheese, and sausage. Something sinful that you have once a year on like, Christmas. I just can't imagine pairing those things up with a burger that already has enough fat.

I know it's all marketing, but it still bugs me. Okay, my rant is over. Just something to think about I guess.

Ewww... that is way too much sugar for just breakfast. Happy belated b-day Luke.

There are so many things related to this stuff that bugs me, but ulitmately it's up to the consumer to educate themselves and make the decisions. Most of them KNOW this shit is bad, but they choose to play dumb and eat it anyways. It's disturbing for sure.

p.s. Great job on the seven miler. I like Saturday mornings for running too. It's perfect. And a sub 10 pace. Whoa! nicely done!

I'm with you in thinking those breakfast options are scary! Who in their right mind would order such a thing ... or allow their kids to for that matter. I think I'd boot if you put those strawberry ice cream pancakes in front of me. Blech!

Yeah, I'm with you. Have you seen the ads for this KFC sandwich they have out? The "buns" are two pieces of fried chicken. Are you kidding me?

It's all way out of control. If people wouldn't buy it they wouldn't make it.
BTW thanks so much for your donation! xoxo

I know really chocolate chips for breakfast? Just like at work we sell chocolate chip muffins, they are so huge! My daughter and I split a blueberry one cause we can't eat the whole thing most of the time. But these things fly off the shelves.

I used to gross out my mom by eating pancakes with strawberry jam (mind you the jam was made by my aunt most of the time!!) But I could hear her or should I say she the look I would get; if I asked for strawberry ice cream for my breakfast pancakes.....

Oh yea I forgot to tease you...
I really only eat hamburgers on special occasions; I really not a big fan of ground beef. Guess too many years of being a fast food worker!
But I trick myself by adding veggies - onion, tomato, lettuce - to help with the mindset that the veggies help make it better for me!! LOL!

Fortunately, my kids are purists but if anyone suggested pancakes with chocolate (two of their favorite foods), they'd probably cringe. This makes it easy to ignore the ads for McDonald's, KFC, etc.

I have family who will eat chocolate cake and cake doughnuts for breakfast and let their kids do it too! It seriously makes me ill watching it...so gross. I wanna say something, but hey, it's their life not mine. But stuff like this bugs me too.

I don't remember the last time I ate at a fast food chain like McDonalds or Burger King. YUCK!

Good post. No wonder so many kids have a weight problem.

Scary! I like to splurge too, but generally try to eat low fat. Ice cream for breakfast? eek

I guess most of it's no worse than donuts - and look how many of those are being sold. I do like to splurge now and then, and sugar is my weakness, but I do know my limits. Well, hahha, after my return from Boston and I ate myself into a sugar coma, you'd never guess that. I'm back on track now, thankfully :).

It really is insane hu?

Is it wrong to have chocolate chip waffles for breakfast? What if they are whole wheat? Doesn't that count for something?

I totally know what commercial you're talking about and that really grosses me out too! I mean, seriously? My husband refuses to even accept that those are a food item because the frosting doesn't melt when they're heated! I had never thought about it before, but it's so true!! That's really scary.

I do have to say though, I've had a choc chip pankcake before and it was pretty delicious. But, it definitely isn't a regular thing for me.
